Sanju is Rajkumar Hirani’s weakest work till date and Here’s Why!

Image
Commencing with the declaration, I LOVED THE FILM, not to the extent I aspired to. The hugely acclaimed Mr. Hirani, who in his career as a director spanning over a decade and a half has helmed merely five films knows the distinct art of balancing content with commerce. Therefore, it is no revelation that Sanju, corresponding to all his prior outings has been lauded both by audiences and critics alike. I am not a fan of Sanjay Dutt, I haven’t loathed his body work but haven’t fancied him either, barring the Munnabhai Series and maybe a couple of more films. His roller-coaster personal life has failed to intrigue me, plainly warranted by the fact that the bulk of the controversy surrounding his life which I’ve witnessed, have been spillover effects from events that had already conspired before I was born. However, major buzz surrounding the film was not owing to the so-called controversial life and times of Sanju Baba, but the illustrious trailer of the film giving a glimps...

Veere di Wedding is Both YAY and NAY! Here's Why?

Image
I feel blessed with the incredible talent of being able to figure out, how a film will actually turn out just by watching its trailer. And on most occasions, my assessment is ON POINT! So when almost a month ago, the Veere di Wedding trailer came out, I was supremely excited to watch the film despite the profound realisation that it is most likely to turn out to be an ALL SURFACE- NO DEPTH SHOW. The YAY Factor The primary reason for my excitement was that I love these look-good, feel-good kind of films. I can sit through a two hour brainless entertainer for the beautiful actors, locations and costumes. I will critique it once I come out of the theatre only to re-watch it when it comes on TV. Also lately the North Indian middle class concept has been selling like hot cakes, so Bollywood hasn't been churning films belonging to this genre. Veere di Wedding was a respite. So I went to watch the movie with abysmally low expectations, despite some very good reviews and I ...

Raazi is Perfect but not Flawless. Here's Why?

Image
A very few films have managed to impress me the way Raazi did, and I am sure most of you who've watched it already, share the same sentiment. The ones who haven't PLEASE DO. This one is a shouldn't be missed. Critics have lauded the film for its brilliant storytelling and the performance of the cast especially Alia as the lead and the audience has loved it equally. Resultantly,  the movie has grossed over 50 crores within a week of its release. For starters, It is brilliant film for Bollywood Standards. The expression "Bollywood standards " pretty much normalises the fact that a film like Raazi is a sporadic occurrence in the  Hindi film industry which is plagued by mediocrity. One of the many good things about Raazi is that within the ambit of a mainstream Bollywood Entertainer it gives the feels of intelligent cinema. Unlike the recently release October starring Varun Dhawan which was another piece of cinematic excellence,  Raazi doesn't lack the l...

Kartaa : A hard-boiled take on life's dismal realities.

Image
Director : Randeep Jha Cast:  Digamber Prasad Rating:  *** Review Kartaa as the name suggests, denotes an unmistakable reference to the doer, the executor. More often that not we believe that our destinies are governed by the almighty. But can we manifest our fortunes in our own hands? Kartaa answers that question! This short film unravels the journey of a small time real-estate agent who is scrambling through his way to successfully negotiate a property transaction, the owner of which is locked in jail. His days commence with his  struggle to start his scooter progressively getting miserable as he confronted by more real struggles for he is incharge of his wife and a school going kid. The story progresses through series of conversations unfolding the multiple layers of the protagonist.  Digamber Prasad carries the film beautifully as he plays a frustrated middle-aged man striving hard to balance the insecurities arising out a formidable career whil...

Short Film Review: THE OTHER WAY!

Image
Director: Imtiaz Ali Cast: Pavel Gulati, Shreya Choudhary Review: Imtiaz Ali is the undisputed king of storytelling and his career as a scriptwriter-director  bears a testimony to that ( Let us forgive him for the debacle that Jab Harry Met Sejal was) Sometimes full length feature films spanning over two hours fail to convey what this 15 minute long movie does, much of the credit for which goes to Imtiaz's impeccable screenplay that keeps you guessing till the end. The film begins with a voice explaining the metaphorical significance of "Time" and its different connotations as the scenes hereafter unfold. The setting is simple, a modern day wedding where a bride comes running to her Mandap, hugs her fiancé before being interrupted by a random photographer who proposes to click a picture because in his words- yaha se guzar raha tha. the bride and the photographer exchange a suspicious stare making you believe that there is more than what meets the eye. Much a...
