Short Film Review: THE OTHER WAY!
Cast: Pavel Gulati, Shreya Choudhary
Review:
Imtiaz Ali is the undisputed king of storytelling and his career as a scriptwriter-director bears a testimony to that ( Let us forgive him for the debacle that Jab Harry Met Sejal was)
Sometimes full length feature films spanning over two hours fail to convey what this 15 minute long movie does, much of the credit for which goes to Imtiaz's impeccable screenplay that keeps you guessing till the end.
The film begins with a voice explaining the metaphorical significance of "Time" and its different connotations as the scenes hereafter unfold. The setting is simple, a modern day wedding where a bride comes running to her Mandap, hugs her fiancé before being interrupted by a random photographer who proposes to click a picture because in his words- yaha se guzar raha tha. the bride and the photographer exchange a suspicious stare making you believe that there is more than what meets the eye.
Much against what one is likely to expect, the photographer is not a vindictive ex-lover who plans to dance to channa mereya at the wedding, but the bride in question is getting married to her boyfriend! The complexity of the bizarre situation at hand, unfolds in flashbacks through a series of narratives..
Imtiaz does a brilliant job with his non-linear storyline and keeps you glued for the entire duration of the film. He carefully conveys the dilemma of a modern-day bride who is contemplating her decision to get married to her own boyfriend till the very date of the wedding. Every scene expresses different aspects of her fear and her interpretation of freedom to overcome her pre wedding apprehensions.
Although the interesting premise is executed well courtesy the terrific performances of the leads but there are a couple of frivolous scenes especially one where outraging of a man's modesty has been trivialised. The film may not go down well with a certain audience, who may term it to be bogus and shallow. But Imtiaz doesn't preach here, nor does he glorify cheating. He merely depicts the current generation whose definition of commitment is guided by convenience.
And for that I will go with a 3.5/5 rating. Watch the movie HERE!
