Review
Kartaa as the name suggests, denotes an unmistakable reference to the doer, the executor. More often that not we believe that our destinies are governed by the almighty.
But can we manifest our fortunes in our own hands?
Kartaa answers that question!
This short film unravels the journey of a small time real-estate agent who is scrambling through his way to successfully negotiate a property transaction, the owner of which is locked in jail. His days commence with his struggle to start his scooter progressively getting miserable as he confronted by more real struggles for he is incharge of his wife and a school going kid.
The story progresses through series of conversations unfolding the multiple layers of the protagonist. Digamber Prasad carries the film beautifully as he plays a frustrated middle-aged man striving hard to balance the insecurities arising out a formidable career while making ends meet. This twenty minute film which chronicles his adventure doesn't leave enough space for the supporting actors, but each of them shine in their limited screen time.
Anurag Kashyap who is the producer of this film has a eye for content that is dark and edgy. This film is no exception and the answer to this lies in the climax where the protagonist decides to bail himself out of his adversities by taking the ordeal into his own hands.
The director Randeep Jha who is an actor and has been assistant director to Anurag Kashyap in the 2018 film, Mukkabaz does a very fine job in his first independent outing. There are some loopholes in the narrative, still it is compelling enough to keep you engrossed till the very end.
The "desi dialogues" form an integral part of the storyline and constantly reminds you of the premise of the storyline which draws from the quotidian affairs of the dealers, buyers and the brokers. One of the scenes in which a man seeks permission from another to use his bathroom saying "Jaane se peel aapka Five Star use Kar lean kya" will crack you up.
Watch the film for its atypical portrayal of a run-off-the-mill adventure.
